Wales and Switzerland meet here in Baku for Group A's Matchday 1 fixture. Both sides will be looking for a repeat of their Euro 2016 exploits. Check out our full betting preview for the latest team news, match odds and betting tips and predictions.
Wales 🏴 Team News
Only the second major championship finals for the Welsh Dragons, having debuted at Euro 2016 with their stunning run to the semi's, they are back at Euro 2020 after a qualifying campaign that took some time to get going. Having lost two of their opening three games, they then embarked on a five-game unbeaten run, qualifying with a win in their final group game against Hungary (2-0).
Robert Page, Wales Coach...
"To be head coach, leading the boys out is going to be a great moment for me and an extremely proud day. Whatever I say to the players will be from the heart – tactics go out of the window then. What the Red Wall, the fans back home, want to see is you representing your country. The players will be ready, but they can't be too fired up because they have to play with their heads as well. It's about getting that balance right."
Wales Predicted Lineup
Ward; Mepham, Rodon, Davies; Roberts, Allen, Ampadu, Williams; James, Wilson, Bale.
Key Player: Gareth Bale
At his peak, Bale was one of the most feared attacking players in the world. With the frightening pace and a willingness to take on any defender, he would rip defences apart with some of his performances. Although not the old player, Bale has returned to Tottenham on a season-long loan, hoping to put his Real Madrid nightmare behind him. He may not have started as many games as Tottenham fans would have hoped for, but he is still Wales' best player, captain and most dangerous threat.
Switzerland 🇨🇭Team News
Switzerland is making their fifth appearance in seven European Championship Finals, having qualified for Euro 2020 as Group D winners with a 17 point tally from 8 games. They went on to win four of their last 5 group games, scoring 13 goals in the process.
Vladimir Petković, Switzerland coach...
"Wales are awkward customers: very compact defensively and good in one-on-one situations. They also have a lot of good quality in the final third of the pitch. We want to dominate play, we want to get hold of the ball, we want to dictate the tempo of the game and we also want to have a cutting edge in the final third and score goals. To do all of that we need to be very focused.”
Switzerland Predicted Lineup
Sommer; Elvedi, Schär, Akanji; Mbabu, Zakaria, Xhaka, Rodríguez; Shaqiri; Embolo, Seferović
Key Player: Granit Xhaka
Xhaka is a tough-tackling midfielder who has managed to turn his club career around at Arsenal. The one-time club captain had a very public dispute with fans that lead to him losing the armband. It looked like his Gunners career was over, but the arrival of Mikel Arteta changed that. Although no longer Arsenal captain, he's back making regular first-team appearances.
Wales v Switzerland Head to Head
The Swiss have the upper hand in the head-to-head stakes. They have won five of the seven meetings between the teams, and four of the five meetings have been wins to nil.
Wales v Switzerland Match Prediction
Switzerland will fancy themselves for a winning start here. The Swiss have a strong record against the Wales. However, the Welsh will be no pushovers and very difficult to break down. This game could be decided by a late goal either way.
