Hungary 🇭🇺 Team News

The Hungarians qualified for Euro 2020 in dramatic style. After making their way into the play-offs, they defeated Bulgaria 3-1 in the semi-final before trailing Iceland in the final with only minutes to spare. Late goals from Loïc Négo (88) and Dominik Szoboszlai (90+2) meant they snatched victory and a place in Euro 2020.

Marco Rossi, Hungary coach...

"We will do everything to push ourselves to the limit. We know who we're up against. We will keep our feet on the ground, but of course we want to achieve our dreams. Dreaming is free, so we dream. Our dream remains between us, of course. We talk about it and want to live that dream. Let's hope it continues during the EURO."

Hungary Predicted Lineup

Gulácsi; Fiola, Orbán, Attila Szalai; Lovrencsics, Kleinheisler, Nagy, Schäfer, Holender; Roland Sallai, Ádám Szalai

Key Player: Willi Orban

The Red Bull Leipzig centre-back is a powerful threat from set-pieces. This was proven in qualifying where he picked up 3 goals and was tied as the leading goalscorer for his country. Dead ball situations may be Hungary's only real opportunity to score against a Portuguese team will dominate possession.

Portugal 🇵🇹 Team News

The reigning European Champions qualified for Euro 2020 with a second place finish behind Ukraine in Group B. Having lifted their first silverware as a nation four years ago at Euro 2016, they continued their winning form and lifted the inaugural Nations League tournament in 2019.

Fernando Santos, Portugal coach...

"Obviously, as contenders to win, if we don't get through the group phase it will be a failure. But I don't believe that will happen to Portugal. I think people have the right and are correct to demand that we do everything in our power to win, using our quality, organisation, commitment, and I believe we are prepared for that. Portugal have the ability to go toe-to-toe with any team that also has ambitions to win the tournament."

Portugal Predicted Lineup

Rui Patrício; Nélson Semedo, Rúben Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Rúben Neves, William, Bruno Fernandes; Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo, Diogo Jota

Key Player: Cristiano Ronaldo

Key player for Portugal? Cristiano Ronaldo...CR7 who else! Ronaldo scored 11 goals in qualifying (only Harry Kane scored more). He holds a host of Euro's records, including; most appearances at the finals stage (21), the competitions top scorer (40 goals), joint most goals at the finals stage (9 with Michel Platini). He's Portugals most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, but has never claimed a major tournament golden boot - maybe this will be his swan song?!

Back Ronaldo to score first against Hungary

Hungary v Portugal Head to Head

Portugal are unbeaten in their 13 previous matches against the Hungarians (W9 D4), they've bagged a total of 30 goals in the process and conceded just 10. As one of the 12 host nations staging the tournament, Hungary are playing at home in Budapest. This may not stop the Portuguese marching on to victory though, they've been victorious on all three occasions the teams have met in the Hungarian capital.

Hungary v Portugal Match Prediction

Portugal can be slow starters to tournaments (drew all three group games at Euro 2016) and may take some time to breakdown a Hungarian side keen to impress on home soil. This has the potential to be a low scoring affair but the Portuguese will likely have enough quality to make the breakthrough.
